Those who have ever visited Greenpoint Tattoo Company will know 50; his unique color dragon and tiger tattoos or expert shading with a personal spin.
Ahead, we spoke with the tattooer about his first ink, strange tattoo requests, and where to go in Greenpoint.
When did you get your first tattoo and what is it?
I got my first tattoo in May of 2013, it’s a deer head on the back of my calf, the very first tattoo. Kinda dumb, but I knew nothing about tattoos.
What’s your favourite thing to draw and what’s something you never want to tattoo again?
I like to draw goofy stuff, a lot of animals and old tattoo flash from the past. I’m open to all ideas from clients though; it’s part of the job!
If you weren’t a tattoo artist, what would you be doing?
Damn that is hard. Maybe working at a restaurant or some job can I travel often?
What’s your go-to spot near the Greenpoint studio?
McCarren Park, to go for a walk on my lunch break. I have also been hanging out at Vital climbing gym a lot before and after work.
When was the last time you went to the beach? Tell me about that day!
It was a month ago; I rode my bike to Rockaway Beach. The weather was nice, and I took a big nap. After that I ride to Flushing and had some Mexican food. Beautiful day for sure.
What is your favourite album to listen to while you work?
I don’t normally put music on at the shop because I love listening to my coworker’s playlist while working. But Navy Blue is my favorite artist right now, I have been listening to a lot of his music.
Who/where/what are you finding the most inspiration from right now?
My coworkers back in China and coworkers at Greenpoint Tattoo . Also, lots of artists I follow on Instagram, books, and stuff I’ve seen around. But Dan Santoro has always inspired me from day one.
What’s something you wish you had more time to do and why?
I wish I could spend more time with my parents, just because I’m so far from home and don’t get to see them often.
What’s the strangest tattoo request you’ve ever had over the years?
I guess when someone asked me to tattoo a bee on his face? I didn’t do it though.
Any advice for people who want to start tattooing?
Do whatever you want, be yourself, trust yourself. Work as hard as you can and dream about it!
